Eva Švankmajerová: Woe to the Painting That Needs a Verbal Interpretation 

The catalogue for Eva Švankmajerová’s exhibition at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art presents a cross section of the work of this prominent figure of Czech art and leading artist of the surrealist movement. Across several chapters, the publication focuses on various themes and aspects of her work such as corporeality, emancipation, a dialogue with the classics of fine art, and more. It contains reproductions of paintings, drawings, objects, ceramics, and painted furniture, which demonstrate the breadth and artistic openness of Švankmajerová’s practice, and the images are accompanied by the artist’s own distinctive commentary on her work. The catalogue includes essays by curator Anna Pravdová and Jan Švankmajer, which situate Eva Švankmajerová’s work in the broader cultural and artistic context and examine the characteristics of her personality. The graphic design of the catalogue was created by Petr Hrůza.
