One winter evening in 1591, a leading manuscript illuminator is murdered in Istanbul, and now he speaks to us from the well where the murderer threw his body. But his voice is lost in the concert of other voices, among which are the masters of the Sultan's painting workshop, the bookbinder Kara and his lover Şeküre, the matchmaker Ester, Uncle Efendi and coins, the color red, death, a dog or even a tree.
Each of them presents their view of the world and tries to convince us of their truth, and it's up to the reader to make a picture of this exciting story. The novel is the crowning work of this Turkish winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (2006).
