A selection of essays written by Pamuk over a period of less than thirty years, the central themes are the author's two greatest passions: books and Istanbul. The collection is a collage of linguistically and stylistically polished texts that range from the author's memories of childhood to penetrating insights into the most bizarre corners of the city on the Bosphorus to critical reflections on world writers and his own writing, and also includes a longer short story. This diverse mosaic consists of a surprisingly coherent, almost novelistic world of a writer straddling the West and the East, who is able to create an extremely engaging story out of inconspicuous everyday things.
